(Fremont)--One local landowner wants to make sure development stays out of his way. And through the help of one non-profit, he has his wish. And more importantly perhaps the assurance.
Don Miller looks out his precious property he's owned for thirty years. The Sandusky River snakes around his land known as Peninsular Farms. Over the last decade, bit by bit, he's protected what's his by signing a conservation agreement, or easement, with Black Swamp Conservancy.
In all, 600 acres on and around his farm cannot be developed regardless of future owners. For his donation Miller received a tax deduction. But according to him, finances is just a small part of why he did it. He wants to preserve his property for future generations.
Remember, with conservation easements, the property owner has the legal right to sell his land. However, Back Swamp Conservancy is responsible of making sure the site remains in its undeveloped state forever. If you have land you want protected, just go to http://www.blackswamp.org/.
