TOLEDO, OHIO -- A Toledo woman accused of hitting and killing a Sylvania High School student will not face jail time after entering a plea in a Lucas County courtroom Thursday.
Cynthia Anderson, 66, pleaded no contest to a charge of aggravated vehicular homicide for the Jan. 21 death of Sylvania Northview freshman Morgan Duris.
The Toledo woman was accused of failing to stop for the flashing lights of a school bus, striking 15-year-old Duris as she was crossing Erie St., in front of her home, in order to board her bus. The incident happened around 7:00 a.m., just before sunrise.
In March, Anderson pleaded not guilty to one charge of aggravated vehicular homicide.
In a statement given to investigators just after the January accident, Anderson, who was on her way to work at the time of the incident, explained what happened that morning. "(The bus) was stopping. I was going to see the red thing and I was going to beat it," she said. "I wasn't looking over there. The child just darted. I was looking at the school bus and the child darted out," Anderson told detectives.
Anderson will be sentenced on Oct. 1. As part of her plea agreement, she will not face jail time and will be placed on community control. Anderson had faced a $10,000 fine and five years in jail.
