TOLEDO, OHIO -- In the shadows of the downtown Toledo skyline, you'll discover a field of gold with lots of green.
At any given time, during any given week, you find some 30 to 40 kids and teens working on what used to be a vacant city lot
And while many of them have been behind bars in the past, they're looking to give a helping hand instead of getting a handout. This is all part of the Oneida Greenhouse Project, put on by Toledo Grows. This is an offshoot of Toledo Botanical Garden.
On site there's a greenhouse where you can find fresh tilapia being raised. Outside there are rows of mixed greens for a perfect salad.
And in the midst of all their work, the young adults, ranging from ages 6 to 20, learn the important lessons of recycling, reducing, and reusing.
Project organizers are soon hoping to build a $60 thousand technical center on the property. But they're in need of help with the funds. If you'd like to help out...please go to http://www.toledogarden.org/content/toledogrows/.
