MAUMEE, OHIO -- Preferred Pools in Maumee knows in this tough economy you probably need to diversify to keep your business afloat. And now the company, with the help of Sure Energy, is tapping into some wind power to accomplish this goal.

Thirty turbines have been sold between Preferred Pools and the utility company. Sure worked exclusively with Woodlands Intermediate School in Huron, Ohio to install a 150 foot tall wind apparatus. It produces enough energy to power 30 homes at any given time.

The 100 kilowatt device went up in the spring. The close proximity to the lake taps into the endless supply of wind blowing across the land. And the specific location on school property enables our future generation to get a handle on different applications with green technology.

The cost of the turbine in the story is $600 thousand. However, various grants have paid for most of it. Also the school estimates saving close to $25 thousand in energy costs each year.

Two other school districts, Margaretta and Oak Harbor, plan on building their own turbines soon.
