TOLEDO, OHIO -- Indoor tanners looking for some more color are about to start paying more for their faux glow.

Beginning Thursday, July 1, customers will be charged a 10% tax on all indoor tanning services.  The new tax is part of health care reform put in place by the Obama administration earlier this year, and it is giving skin cancer experts hope that it will deter indoor tanning.

The tax applies to customers of tanning salons that use artificial light sources such as beds, lamps and booths, and does not apply to spray tans. Licensed medical professionals that provide phototherapy services, and some physical fitness facilities that offer tanning as an incidental service without separate fee are exempt.

The new tax is expected to bring in nearly $3 billion to help fund the $940 billion health care overhaul put in place by the Obama administration in March of this year.
