TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A former part-time police officer is free on bond as he appeals his 10-year sentence in a shooting that left a man paralyzed from the waist down.
Former Ottawa Hills officer Thomas White posted a $100,000 appellate bond and was released Monday. That was hours after a Lucas County judge sentenced him for shooting 25-year-old motorcyclist Michael McCloskey Jr. in the back during a 2009 traffic stop.
At the hearing, Common Pleas Judge Gary Cook turned down a motion for a new trial filed by White's attorneys. Cook said the matter would be best left for an appeals court.
The 27-year-old White testified that he fired because he believed McCloskey was reaching for a weapon. Prosecutors said the ex-officer used excessive force.
