COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's governor is asking President Barack Obama for a disaster declaration for three northwestern Ohio counties hit by tornadoes last weekend.

Gov. Ted Strickland sent a letter to Obama on Wednesday asking for federal aid now that teams have finished surveying the damage in Wood, Ottawa and Fulton counties.

A disaster declaration for those areas would make available grants and loans and help cities and townships pay for debris removal and make repairs to public infrastructure.

Tornadoes that touched down east and west of Toledo last weekend destroyed dozens of homes and killed five people.

A spokeswoman for the governor says the state hopes to get a quick decision on the request for federal help.
