Jury votes to convict Wayne Powell on 11 counts

TOLEDO, OH (AP) --

A man was convicted Tuesday of setting a house fire that killed four people, including his former girlfriend.

Wayne Powell, 43, could receive the death penalty following his conviction on 11 counts, including aggravated murder and aggravated arson in the Nov. 11 fire that killed Rose Mary McCollum, 52; Mary Rose McCollum, 33; Jamal McCollum-Myers, 4; and Sanna Thompson, 2.

Powell and Mary Rose McCollum had an on-and-off relationship for about 10 years and had split up, police said. Powell was involved in an argument at the home just hours before the fire.

Rose Mary McCollum was the mother of Mary Rose McCollum, who was the mother of Jamal McCollum-Myers and the cousin of Sanna Thompson.

The Lucas County Common Pleas jury that convicted Powell will reconvene later to determine whether Powell should receive a death sentence.

Four others, a woman and three children, escaped the fire, fire officials said.
