TOLEDO, OHIO -- Members of the Toledo-area community came together Wednesday to honor police officers that have been killed in the line of duty.

The Toledo Police Department held their annual fallen officers memorial service in the Memorial Garden in downtown Toledo. Families and friends came gathered to remember fallen officers from Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre said the event is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice. "I want them to come to the realization that this is a tough job. When those officers put on that badge and that gun and go out everyday and leave their families, (they) literally can't guarantee that they are (going to) come home."

According to Chief Navarre, 126 officers in the state of Ohio gave up their lives last year.

The last Toledo Police officer to die in the line of duty was Det. Keith Dressel, who was shot by Robert Jobe on a North Toledo street in February 2007.  

William Miscannon was the last TPD officer killed in the line of duty before Dressel's death. He was killed in 1970.  A fundraiser benefitting the William Miscannon Scholarship Fund at Owens Community College, and held in memory of Keith Dressel, will be held Thursday, May 20.  The event will be held at Hooter's Restaurant on Monroe St. in Toledo.  The cost is $15 at the door.
