TOLEDO, OHIO -- One of the greatest outdoor gems across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan is the Metroparks of the Toledo Area. Chances are one of these parks is very close to you.
Ten metroparks make up the system. The land preserves many of the region's most significant natural areas, including Oak Openings, the Lake Erie Coastal Zone, and green corridors along the Ottawa River and Swan Creek.
Obviously, there's plenty to do on this land, totaling 11-thousand acres of natural heritage across Lucas County. From roller blading to biking. Don't forget about your pets too!
The primary funding source is a countywide 1.4 mil operating levy. It goes for ten years and was last approved in 2007. Those who frequent the parks say it's a great investment for taxpayers.
And while county residents foot a good deal of the $10 million cost to keep everything going, these people also seem to play a huge role in running it as well.
There are plans in the works to actually connect the Oak Openings Metropark near Swanton to the Secor Metropark in Berkey. So stay tuned for further developments.
