TOLEDO, OH -- The City of Toledo and two of its unions have agreed to contract concessions.
City council met in a special session Thursday, voting 10-0 to lift the exigent circumstances declaration against AFSCME Local 2058, which represents administrative and clerical professionals, and AFSCME Local 7, which represents communications workers.
Under the agreement, Local 2058 members will be required to pay 3-percent of their retirement contribution through the end of the year. They were paying 2.25-percent. The exigent circumstances declaration would have required them to pay 10-percent, which is the normal rate for a public employee. Union members will also have to start paying toward their health care costs. Under the unmodified contract, they received free health insurance.
To date, the city has agreed to concessions with all of its unions but those representing police officers. The Toledo Police Patrolmans Association members defeated proposed contract amendment earlier this week. After Lucas County Common Pleas Court Judge James Jensen refused to rule on a challenge to the exigent circumstances, the TPPA is preparing an appeal to the State Employee Relations Board.
The Toledo Police Command Officers Association rejected a contract amendment prior to city council's Thursday meeting.
