TOLEDO, OHIO -- A Toledo teenager is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull early Thursday morning.
Kayla Irby, 17, was waiting for her school bus in front of 2740 Upton Ave. shortly before 8:00 a.m. when a pit bull crossed the street and began to attack her. The Start High School student suffered deeps wounds to her right thigh in the attack. Her hand was also injured while trying to defend herself from the dog.
A man driving by the incident, Kevin Wehrle, stopped his car and jumped out to help the teenager. Wehrle managed to get the dog off Irby and subdued it using his body weight until additional help arrived. The Lucas County Dog Warden took the dog into custody.
Irby was treated at Toledo Hospital for her injuries.
Police say the dog's owner has not been identified.
