TOLEDO, OHIO -- The Lucas County Grand Jury has decided that the Toledo teen accused of raping a woman in broad daylight along a West Toledo street will be tried for the crime.
Anferney Fontenet, 15, has been formally indicted on one count of rape and one count of aggravated robbery for the incident which occurred Jan. 19, 2010 on a sidewalk along Royalton Road near Lyman Ave. in West Toledo. Police say the victim, a 26-year-old woman who suffers from bipolar disorder and Asperger's syndrome, was walking to the West Toledo library on Sylvania Ave. when she was attacked. Authorities say that Fontenet came up behind her and put scissors to her throat. He then took off her pants and proceeded to rape her, according to police.
In March, a juvenile court judge ruled that because of the nature of his crimes, Fontenet would be tried in an adult court. Judge Connie Zemmelman also stated that an adult court would be better able to treat Fontenet. The teen, who is a sophomore at Start High School, told police that he knew why he was being interviewed by authorities. "I walked up behind a girl, grabbed her neck, raped her, and took her phone," Fontenet told detectives after the attack.
A trial date has yet to be set. If convicted, Fontenet faces up to 20 years in prison.
