TOLEDO, OHIO -- Police have identified the man shot and killed by a Toledo shopkeeper during an attempted robbery Sunday morning.

Alfred Evans, 52, was fatally shot after trying to rob Bengal's Food Mart, 2625 Airport Highway.  The man, disguised with a wig, walked into the store, announced the robbery and produced a handgun, according to Toledo Police Sgt. Tim Noble.  A store owner was able to retrieve his gun and exchange fire with Evans, hitting and killing him.  Three other customers were also inside the location. There were no other injuries.

Evans, also known as Alfred Dickerson, was a known felon with an extensive criminal history, according to police.  Toledo Police Captain Ray Carroll says that Evans was convicted in 1980 of shooting two Columbus, Ohio police officers.  He served 29 years behind bars for the shootings before being released in 2009.
