TOLEDO, OHIO -- Toledo Publics Schools board members are considering nearly $50 million in budget cuts amidst of deficit that could wipe out many district staples.

At a special board meeting held Wednesday, officials discussed said the closure of Libbey High School could save the district nearly $2 million.  In addition, the district said eliminating athletics across all schools would save just over $3.5 million, and getting rid of bus transportation would save just over $1 million. 

Other cuts proposed by TPS for the next academic year and their potential savings:
Food service reductions ($1 million)
Elimination of school crossing guards ($500,000)
Elimination of school resource officers ($381,916)
Closing of Toledo Technology Academy ($1,262,446)
Closing of Toledo Early College High School ($1,390,982)
Consolidation of Stewart Academy for Girls and Lincoln Academy for Boys ($344,211)
Elimination of 34 teaching, six admin, and five clerical staff positions ($1,794,520)

The board also discussed the search for a new superintendent.  Current TPS head, John Foley, will resign after the current school year.

The district live-streamed the meeting online and gave citizens the opportunity to participate by allowing them to post comments online during the meeting.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled for March 17 (5:30 p.m.) at Start High School where the public will be given the opportunity to comment on proposed cuts.  District officials say they will meet again on March 23 when the board will approve two lists of cuts totaling nearly $50 million.
