OTTAWA COUNTY -- A number of the neglected horses rescued from a local farm last month are about to head to new homes.
Rebekah Recker says she and other volunteers at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds have been taking turns working around the clock to care for the hungry, hurting horses. The Arabian horses were rescued from an Oak Harbor farm in January after humane officers received a call that several horses were malnourished and even dying.
The horses were brought to their new, temporary home at the fairgrounds, where they are now being fed seven times each day. "All the horses that have come here are still standing, they're living and perking up," said Recker.
On Tuesday, the Ottawa County Humane Society agreed to turn over 15 of the horses to the Arabian Rescue Mission. The mission was scheduled to arrive Wednesday to take inventory of the horses it will remove from the fairgrounds; however, due to weather conditions they cancelled their trip. The mission has approved a valid home for each of the horses.
The horses are expected to be moved to their new foster homes on Saturday.
Recker says she and her fellow volunteers always knew the horses didn't belong to them, but that won't make it any easier to watch them go. "It's tough on all the volunteers out here. They've put a lot of time and energy into caring for these horses."
