(Toledo)--A campus crusade is underway around the country to get college students motivated in recycling. Recyclemania actually started in 2001, but just this year, the University of Toledo jumped on the bandwagon to make a difference.
University of Toledo senior Stephanie Zigman admits she has a long way to go when it comes to recycling. But she realizes a lot is riding on it, including saving the earth for future generations.
UT is one of more than five hundred colleges taking part in RecycleMania. Since it all began in mid-January, the school has collected some 67-thousand pounds of recycled materials.
Last year, UT students participated in a blackout of sorts, conserving electricity and saving $16 thousand in energy costs. So obviously, there's interest and motivation. And as far as the top prize goes after collecting recyclables for two months, well, it's really more about bragging rights than anything else.
Bowling Green is another local university taking part in the program. The competition is over at the end of march. To follow the progress, log onto http://www.recyclemaniacs.org.
