FINDLAY, OH -- Representatives from the federal and state government were in Findlay Monday to display the new flood insurance rate maps for Hancock County and to answer questions from residents.

Jonathan Sorg of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the new maps became a priority after the 2007 floods caused extensive commercial and residential property damage.  "These maps have incorporated  new and more accurate data to better reflect the potential flooding conditions that can occur here," Mr. Sorg said.

David Schein of FEMA told residents that as long as Hancock County complies with regulations concerning new construction in flood zones homeoweners would still have access to flood insurance that is underwritten by the federal government.  "Well there is a significant flood hazard in this area, Findlay has the most flood insurance policies in the area," Mr. Schein said.

People whose homes are in zones "A" and "AE" will most likely be required to have flood insurance.

To view the new flood insurance rate maps contact Hancock County Engineer Steven Wilson via his e-mail address at engineer@co.hancock.oh.us.
