SANDUSKY COUNTY -- Three boys have died after falling through the ice on the Sandusky River.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Rice Township. The Sandusky County Sheriff's office says Da'Vonte Everette, 9, his brother, Jay'Den Taylor-Everett,8, and Rafel Villanueva, 11, were pronounced dead at area hospitals after being pulled from the frigid water.

The rescue happened near the intersection of Harbor Hill Drive and Shorewood Drive.

Mild temperatures caused the ice to become dangerously thin.

All three boys, from Fremont, were playing outside a Fremont home just a few blocks from the river before the incident. The Sandusky County Sheriff's office says they are not sure what led the boys to walk onto the ice.  They continue to investigate the incident.
