SYLVANIA, OHIO -- Police in Sylvania say a Northview High School student was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to board a school bus early Thursday morning.

The incident happened at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Erie St. near Apple Meadow Dr. in Sylvania.

Northview freshman, Morgan Duris, was crossing Erie St. in order to board her school bus when she was struck by an SUV. The 15-year-old was taken to Flower Hospital with serious injuries.  Authorities confirmed Duris succumbed to her injuries shortly after 8:00 a.m.

According to authorities, the school bus did have its crossing lights on cautioning drivers to stop.

“Drivers just need to really pay attention to what they’re doing, which is driving.  They need to watch for the students getting on the buses.  Just remember it may not be your kid, but the next street over it is your kid getting on the bus,” said Sergeant Dani Lynn Miller of the Sylvania Police Department.

The female driver of the SUV, Cynthia Anderson, 66, of Toledo, was taken to the Sylvania Police Department for questioning.  No charges or citations have been filed. Sylvania Police say there was no indication that alcohol or cell phones were a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by Sylvania Police.

“Our children, we want to make sure they’re safe.  Unfortunately, this morning it is an indication of just what can happen in the worst case scenario,” said Sergeant Miller.

Sylvania Schools Superintendent Brad Rieger told school parents Thursday morning that the school's thoughts and prayers are with the Duris family and all of Morgan's classmates, teachers, and friends.  Counselors are on hand at Northview High School to speak with students.

Sylvania Police released this 911 call on Friday.
