TOLEDO -- Embattled YMCA & JCC of Greater Toledo CEO Robert Alexander has announced he will retire after 20 years in the position.

Alexander has come under intense scrutiny in recent months after word the organization planned to close the South YMCA branch due to low membership rates.

According to a statement released by a YMCA spokesperson, Alexander has overseen a period of substantial growth for the organization and its community impact. In 2008, the YMCA was honored for its 'one-of-a-kind' merger with the Jewish Community Council of Sylvania.

Alexander will step down effective July 31, 2010.

A search committee will work with staff from the YMCA national resource office to find a successor.
