TOLEDO -- The University of Toledo Medical Center began began laying off a significant number of employees Monday, according to university president Lloyd Jacobs.

In a letter sent to faculty and staff, Jacobs said that the decision to make the cuts came after much review and discussion during this serious economic recession.  He said market factors have forced the university to make difficult decisions, which include reducing operating expenses at the Health Science Campus.

There is no word on how many personnel cuts are being made or which departments are affected.

Jacobs and Health Science Campus provost, Jeffrey Gold, saythe goals and committment to patients at the medical center will not be altered.  They hope that many of Monday's laid off workers, if not all, will be able to return to the university when economic conditions ease.
