TOLEDO -- Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski has confirmed to NBC24 that several regional hotel owners are interested building on the site of the former Showcase Cinemas on Secor Road.

Under a site plan, the current structure, built in 1964, would be demolished to make way for a pair of hotels and a retail strip on the property.

On June 11, The Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commission will hear a proposal by two firms seeking approval to build hotels on the 13-acre site. Hampton Inn & Suites has proposed building a 18,600 square-foot hotel at the northeast corner of the property. In addtion, a second hotel, identical to the Hampton Inn has also been proposed.

National Amusements, owner of the former Showcase Cinemas, closed the theatre in 2005 to focus operations on a newer complex at Westfield Franklin Park Mall. Since closing, the theatre property has been for sale for an asking price of $7 million.
