TOLEDO, OHIO -- The Toledo City Council got down to business Wednesday afternoon passing a series of measures aimed at reducing a $27.7 million budget deficit.
Several council members spoke about the proposal to slash over $400,000 from youth athletics. Members ultimately decided not to vote on the measure Wednesday.
The measure that were passed in Wednesday's session have reduced the deficit by just under $7 million:
- $1.1 million from fire department overtime.
- Fuel budget restrictions that will save $500,000
- Layoffs saving over $700,000
Members decided that there needs to be more discussion about the privatizing of city trash collection as well as the 36-hour work week proposal.
Among the measures that were voted down Wednesday was a tax on those who work outside the city of Toledo.
Council members who spoke after the council meeting recognized that much work remains to be done. Council must still come up with another $20 million to balance the budget.
