All the “Joe the Plumber” hype maybe winding down, but come 2010 one group wants to see Joe Wurzelbacher run for Congress. Two college kids from Massachusetts are trying to convince Joe to run by gathering support from across the country.
His 15-minutes of fame could extend until 2010. There is an initiative right now to draft “Joe the Plumber” to run for Congress.
We think he signifies people who understand small business, and that small businesses flourish when taxes are kept at the lowest level possible,” Derek Khanna-Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans.
The Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans created the Website: www.joewurzelbacher2010.com. Derek Khanna is one of the members trying to convince Joe to “save America from going down the drain.”
"This is not an official petition to get him on the ballot, and so in that regard they (signatures) don't all need to be from Ohio. This is a petition to go to Joe and say you have considerable support around America,” Khanna.
When asked about the effort, Ohio 9th District Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur’s campaign issued this statement: Ohioans have had enough of endless campaigns. Congresswoman Kaptur thinks voters would prefer to cast their vote in this year’s election before outside groups come to start the next one.
The website is growing in popularity. It’s already been mentioned in several major newspapers. The increase in traffic has forced the operators of the site to add a second petition to handle the demand.
"We have an unbelievable response from people all across America who really understand what we're trying to say here and what this guy represents,” Khanna.
Despite the support, the most important endorsement is still missing. No word yet if “Joe the Plumber” will make the plunge as a political candidate.
