ANN ARBOR, MICH. (AP) -- Elliott Mealer has always believed he was destined to play college football, but just not at Michigan.

The 6-foot-6-inch, 298-pound freshman offensive lineman from Wauseon, Ohio, emerged from Schembechler Hall Sunday at the Wolverines' football media day. He grew up despising the Wolverines.

Mealer says he's gotten lots of support from Michigan coaches and players as he deals with the crash deaths of his father and girlfriend.

Mealer was hurt and his brother paralyzed in the same crash, when another vehicle ran a stop sign.

He's expected to be redshirted this season as he recovers from a shoulder injury.
