SANDUSKY, OHIO (AP) -- A former nightshift nurse accused of abusing patients at a nursing home has been charged with additional counts of rape and sexual penetration.

John Riems has been in jail since he was arrested in January and charged with sexually abusing a 55-year-old man and another man in his 80s.

He was charged with 12 more counts of rape and two counts of sexual penetration, said Perkins Township police Det. Al Jenkins.

"More stuff could come down," he said. "We're not sure yet."

Riems told police following his arrest that he abused almost 100 patients since the 1980s, but he could remember specific information on only about two dozen, authorities said.

It's doubtful investigators will ever know if his claims were true. Many of the patients the man claims to have assaulted are unable to speak and some are dead.

Riems worked at 12 nursing homes and hospitals in Ohio. He also spent a few months in 1990 at a care center in Melville, N.Y.

His attorney said Tuesday that the confession to police was false and coerced. "John maintains his innocence," said attorney Troy Wisehart.

Investigators have said they've been looking into suspected assaults based on names Riems provided.

Riems told police the pattern of abuse started shortly after his career began in 1985.
