TOLEDO -- Joe McNamara, who recently announced he will run for mayor, is set to take a $4,500 pay cut when he gives up his seat as Toledo City Council President.
On Feb. 12, McNamara announced plans to challenge incumbent Mayor Mike Bell (I) in the Nov. 2013 election. A week later, on Feb. 19, McNamara says he will resign as City Council president in order to put the interests of the people above his own political interests. "I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as Council President," McNamara said in a statement. "But being in public office is not about advancing one's self interests; it's about serving the people and always picking the difficult right over the easy wrong."
McNamara first served as Council President in 2009, and did not seek the seat while running for State Senate in 2010. He will take a $4,500 pay cut by giving up the presidency.
After announcing his intentions to run for mayor of Toledo, the democratic candidate blasted Mayor Bell on economic development in the city during his term. If elected mayor, McNamara says he will prioritize public safety, strengthen public schools, and create better economic opportunities for city residents. "When people are working, we have more money to do things. So I want to shift the focus of the city of Toledo economic development to focusing on jobs for people who live here," McNamara told WNWO."That is what everything is built on."
