ARCHBOLD -- The drought that Northwest Ohio experienced in 2012 was tough for many farmers in the region. In particular dairy farmers were especially hard hit. Over 100 farmers met with representatives from twelve different federal agencies on Tuesday to discuss the drought's impact on farms across Northwest Ohio. The conference was held at Northwest State Community College in Archbold. One of the attendees was Leon Weaver, dairy farmer from Montpelier. "The drought affected our crop yields tremendously, our corn yields were 50% less than normal," Mr. Weaver said.
Roy Klopfenstein, a soybean farmer, said the simple fact that the meeting ws being held was good news for farmers. "Well just the fact that they are here and listening and they will go back and give it to the policy makers and hopefully implement changes that are productive and not destructive," Mr. Klopfenstein said.
An official from the Department of Agriculture told farmers that the government would move to make crop insurance more available to farmers in areas that experience severe weather that impacts crop production.
