TOLEDO -- The Chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party called a press conference on Monday in which he condemned republican Rich Iott for participating in historical re-enactments dressing up in Nazi uniforms. Chris Redfern said that it is clear that Iott was not properly vetted before becoming the GOP's nominee in the race against the 14 term incumbent Rep. Marcy Kaptur. "By dressing up as one of Hitler's SS soldiers, he made a mockery of what is perhaps the saddest and sickening event in the course of human history," Mr. Redfern said. On the third day of the scandal Iott remains defiant. Later in the day he held his own press conference to once again defend the pictures as part of his involvement in military and historical re-enactments. "Anybody who looks at the facts can only come to one inescapable conclusion which is that for many years I have been a historical re-enactor," Mr. Iott said. Notwithstanding Iott's defiance the Republican establishment has begun to distance itself from their nominee in the race for Ohio's 9th Congressional district. Eric Cantor of Virginia, the number 2 Republican in the House says he no longer supports Iott and the National Republican Campaign Committe has removed Iott's name from its website.
