Giving family learning to receive
TOLEDO, OH -- NBC24 brought you the story of Tom and Zach McGuire earlier this week: a charitable pair that has fallen on hard times.
Now the family used to giving is learning how to receive.
"As you can see this is 'Cocoa for California', this is Katrina and Flood Aide," said Zach McGuire of his collection of fundraiser pictures.
And now, Zach is selling many of his toys for a cause even closer to home: helping his out of work father.
"It's what you're doing that matters and how you're helping people," said Zach.
The news of Zach's selfless generosity has inspired others to give.
"We decided to come out here and give him and his family a helping hand. He deserves it," said Todd Preston.
"One of our neighbors made sure that our dog had plenty of treats and we've gotten several donations through the mail," said Tom McGuire.
One pair of donors drove 45 minutes to hand deliver an envelope.
"It's extremely humbling," said Tom. "God is teaching me to swallow my pride maybe he's knocking me down a rung and working through other people."
And while donations and toy sales probably will not be all the family needs to get back on their feet. Tom says, to him, it is more than enough.
"I've prayed to God: 'Let me win the lottery' as I'm sure a lot of people do. This is better than the lottery," said Tom. "This is worth more because it's other people reaching out to us."
And you can bet Tom and Zach will be giving back soon again themselves.
As Zach says, everyone can do something.
"Even though they don't feel like they could do anything. They could do a kool-aid stand like me," said Zach.
The McGuires are not sure if they will hold their toy sale again Sunday. If you drive by their address and the banners and signs are up, they are.
