SANDUSKY COUNTY -- Former Clyde-Green Springs Exempted Village School District Superintendent Todd Helms has been arrested after a state auditor's office investigation revealed he stole almost $300,000 from the school district.

Helms has been indicted by a Sandusky County grand jury on 19 criminal counts including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, theft in office, misuse of credit cards, money laundering, tampering with records, and grand theft.

Helms was taken into police custody around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at his Ottawa County home.   He was booked at the Clyde Police Department and is currently being held in the Sandusky County Jail.

According the the Auditor of State's office, Wednesday's indictment indicates Helms is responsible for the above counts including falsifying or altering invoices, depositing school funds in personal accounts and stealing money from several school organizations.

Auditor of State Mary Taylor began a special audit of the school district in August 2008 after allegations were made against former Superintendent Helms.  The audit is stil in progress.

School officials began their investigation in July of 2008 by contacting Clyde Police, referencing irregular items that pointed to then Superintendent Helms.
