TOLEDO -- Walmart announced that it has installed solar panels at 12 Walmart stores and Sam's Clubs in Ohio. The solar panel installation will add approximately 6,000,000 kWh of generation production-enough energy to power more than 820 homes- and are expected to supply approximately 5-20 percent of each store's overall electricity use. "Walmart's installation of solar on 12 store rooftops is the largest solar commitment ever made by a retail business in Ohio," according to Bill Spratley, Executive Director of Green Energy Ohio.
Greg Knudson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toledo-based Nextronex Energy Systems, says Walmart's decision to go solar could have a positive impact on the industry. "What it does is show that solar can be applied to the commercial, non-residential markets as companies are starting to see the benefits of solar power," Mr. Knudson said.
The Walmart solar panels were installed by SolarCity a company based in San Mateo, California.
