New research from the Center for Disease Control finds children are eating as much salt in their diets as adults.
The study looked at the eating habits of over 6,000 children between the ages of 8 to 18 in the U.S.
Over the course of several days, kids were asked twice to name food items they’d consumed the day before.
Researchers found the majority took in nearly 1,000 milligrams more than the daily recommended amount of 2,300 milligrams for adults, which is no more than 1 teaspoon.
Extra salt is linked with higher blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
The study is published in the journal Pediatrics.
