The Ohio Amber Alert program has decided to stop sending overnight alerts to cell phones after receiving complaints about one sent early Wednesday.
Around 6:30 a.m., an alert was sent to phones in the Wireless Emergency Alert program about two girls who were kidnapped in West Virginia. While the girls were later found safe, the Ohio Highway Patrol told the Columbus Dispatch that they received several complaints about being woken up by the notification.
Amber Alert founder Pastor Charles Williams was quick to respond to these complaints, saying, "this new method is critical, If your child was abducted, I'm sure you would think differently. "
All cell phones are opted into the Wireless Emergency Alert program automatically. The program alerts users of severe weather, emergency presidential messages and Amber Alerts.
