TOLEDO -- Family and friends came together at a candle-light vigil Wednesday evening to remember 29-year-old Katie Sheppard, who police found strangled at her Toledo home last Friday.

Gathered on the front lawn of her home on Rivard Road, those who knew Katie best, offered prayers, and lasting memories. Mourners lit candles on the front steps where Katie’s body was found, covered with a blanket.

“She was just always so caring and everyone, I think, will remember her and all of her loving special ways,” said Carol Inman, Katie’s grandmother. “I know that Katie’s looking down on us and saying thank you for all the beautiful, wonderful people that loved her.”

Kyle Sheppard, who is suspected in Katie’s murder, turned himself in to Canadian authorities in Quebec on Sunday. The couple has shared their Toledo home since they were married in 2008.

Katie’s murder is one in a string of domestic violence-related crimes recently plaguing the Toledo-area.

“I hope this coming together, that people will open up to other people, so we can help them also,” said Inman.

A community now grieves, and holds onto hope amidst a tragedy that has devastated the lives of two families.

Inman added, “Just ask for prayers for all of our families involved and that we have the strength to continue on and to help other people also.”

You can help Katie’s family by donating to the Katie Sheppard Memorial Fund at any Fifth Third Bank branch. Services for Katie will be held Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home on Laskey Road in Toledo.
