The exposure to background TV noise could have an impact on your child’s development, a new study suggests.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina Wilmington found children take in an average of four hours of background TV every day, meaning the TV is on, but kids aren’t necessarily watching it.

The study also finds lower income families and African American children were exposed to as much as six hours a day.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says too much exposure can harm social play and cognitive functioning in children under the age of 2.

The study is published in the journal Pediatrics.
