HOLLAND, OH -- Springfield Local Schools kicked showed off the district's anti-bullying campaign Friday night with a community tailgate party.

Prior to kick-off of the Springfield H.S. vs. Napoleon H.S. football match, volunteers served up hot dogs, desserts and assorted snacks in support of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

The faculty-led, K-8 program is designed to "restructure the existing school environment  to reduce opportunities for bullying." The program also aims to improve peer-to-peer relations and is designed to reduce the tendency of antisocial behavior from aggressive students.

"Bullying is a problem across the country," said Dr. Michael O'Shea, Assistant Superintendent for Springfield Schools. "Because it has become so pervasive in society it takes an entire community to step up and say it ends, and it ends now."

Students, parents and faculty wore shirts and stickers that boldly read, "STEP UP: BULLYING STOPS NOW!." The shirts were handed out to students in school and were also available with donations.

The four top Anti-Bullying rules read:

1. We will not bully others

2. We will try to help students who are bullied

3. We will try to include students who are left out

4. If we know that  somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home

Springfield Local Schools plans to implement the program with activities in the classroom for students to recognize bullying and how to stop it. Faculty will receive training through research and in-service learning.
