TOLEDO -- Over two hundred people attended the dedication of the new fire station 6 in East Toledo.  Toledo Fire Chief Luis Santiago said it was appropriate to have the dedication on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.  "The fire profession is a brother and sisterhood, and wherever there is loss in another department ,we feel that same loss, and so to open a station like this on a day like today I can't think of a better way to honor those who lost their lives that day," Chief Santiago said.

The new fire station 6 is located on 1155 Oak Street and replaces the station on Starr Avenue that had been in service since the early 1950's.  The new station was built at a cost of $3 million, a portion of those funds coming from the 2009 federal stimulus package.   During the dedication ceremony a bell was rung in a sequence of 3 by 4 by 3 in recognition of the 343 New York City firefighters who perished when the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed on the morning of September 11, 2001. Toledo Mayor Mike Bell was the fire chief that day.  " I remember being the fire chief at that time and what we were going through as a city, and so to be able to dedicate this station on this day is a really great thing,"  Mayor Bell said.

There are still a few more items that have to be moved into the station until it becomes fully operational next week.
