MAUMEE -- Last week the Toledo Area Humane Society took custody of 18 dogs that were numbered among the 280 dogs seized from a puppy mill in Shelby, Ohio. Most of the 18 chihuahua's and the 2 Shar Pei's have been deemed fit for adoption.

John Dinon, Executive Director of the Toledo Area Humane Society, says the shelter will participate in a Mega Adoption event at the PetSmart in Rossford this weekend.

"We are having an adoption event on Saturday and Sunday noon-5pm each day and our goal is to do 200 adoptions,"  Dinon said.

In addition to the Toledo Area Humane Society, the Lucas County Dog Warden, the Lucas County Pit Crew, the Ohio Small Dog Rescue, Planned Pethood and the Wood County Humane Society will be participating in this adoption event.

The adoption event hours are between noon and 5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the PetSmarts store in Rossford located at 27161 Crossroads Parkway.

The ASPCA is sponsoring a competition with animal shelters around the country.  The Toledo Area Humane Society could win between $5,000 and $125,000 depending on the number of cats and dogs it adopts out during the course of the competition.  If the Toledo Area Humane Society adopts out 878 animals between now and the end of October it stands to win at least $5,000.
