PERRYSBURG -- A grassroots transit committee, called Perrysburg for Transportation 2012, met Monday at the Kingston Residence of Perrysburg. Their purpose is to gain public support for a proposed levy that will fund a new bus system after voters opted to discontinue TARTA service in March.
Perrysburg City Council passed a proposition July 17 to place the 1.4 mill levy on the November 6 ballot. The tax impact would be about $44 for a $100,000 home.
Committee member Tom Mackin told WNWO at Monday's meeting, "Many senior citizens and those with disabilities rely on public transportation to get around." He continued, "Businesses also benefit when public transportation is available to residents."
If the levy passes, Mackin said the new transit system could be monitored to run in a "cost-effective and efficient manor." Although a contract is yet to be awarded to any one bus company, Mackin believes the financial impact would be "substantially less" than TARTA.
