TEMPERANCE -- Tuesday night, the Bedford Board of Education approved a decision to send 45 layoff notices to teachers.

The move was as pre-emptive attempt to cut costs as officials anticipate state funding cuts.

Bedford Board of Education President Michael Smith says that the state has already reduced "per pupil" funding and they are just trying to work with what they have.

"It's the worst thing in the world to put somebody in that concern that they're not sure if they are going to have a job next year. All of our families are struggling," Smith said.

School officials hope that many of those teachers, who will receive layoff notices, can be hired back.

Smith says they are waiting for the state to approve back after they learn how much funding they will get this summer.

They believe that if the district's 3-year deficit elimination plan is approved they will be able to rehire many of those let go.
