TOLEDO -- The University of Toledo has earned a conservation award from Polar Bears International (PBI), the world's leading polar bear conservation group. 

The University of Toledo earned PBI's Paw of Approval Award (PAW) through its reduction of CO2 emissions and reduced use of resources; its commitment to high quality, quantity and diversity of climate change-related research; and its participation in a multi-university commitment to minimizing climate change.

"Whether it is in our environmental research, our University operations, or our instruction and community stewardship, The University of Toledo is committed to minimizing our environmental impact and advancing knowledge that ensures our interactions with our planet are safe and sustainable," UT President Lloyd Jacobs said. "The University of Toledo is honored to accept Polar Bears International's PAW Award and will continue to do all we can to better understand, slow and halt climate change."

Robert Buchanan, president and CEO of PBI, praised the Toledo Zoo's efforts as well, saying: "The Zoo is also leading the way by example with its own operations, providing inspiration to local businesses and offices."

The Toledo Zoo is part of PBI's network of Arctic Ambassador Centers. These centers focus on animal well-being and enrichment, take a leadership role in stewardship and carbon reduction efforts in their communities, and participate in PBI polar bear research efforts.
