A Monroe County father and his two sons are now nearing the end of their long road to recovery after being injured in a car bombing in September.
Erik Chappell and his two sons, 13-year-old Grant and 11-year-old Cole, have gone through months of physical therapy since.
The three were headed to football practice when the car they were in exploded.
“His quick and decisive actions certainly saved the lives of his sons as the car ultimately burned to a shell. Authorities remarked that his sons are very lucky to be alive,” Susan Vanisacker said while presenting Chappell with an award.
On Thursday night, the American Red Cross honored Chappell with an “Adult Good Samaritan Hero” award.
“It means quite a bit, but I hope the recognition goes a little further than me,” Chappell said of the recognition.
During his acceptance speech, the Sylvania attorney turned the spotlight away from himself thanking his family and the community for their help.
“There’s a lot of people that have helped us get to the point that we are today…We’re doing well, we're doing well,” Chappell said.
The investigation into the bombing is still an open investigation.
