The feeling of being overworked and underpaid is a reality for many during this tough economy, but have you ever felt overworked and underappreciated?  

A new survey by the American Psychological Association finds employees who don’t feel valued are less likely to perform well on the job.

It reveals 93 percent of employees who reported feeling valued said that they are motivated to do their best at work, in comparison to 33 percent who reported feeling appreciated.

The survey also found those who feel less valued plan to look for another job in the next year.

50 percent of those who feel unacknowledged plan to quit, while only 21 percent of dearly beloved employees said they intend to look for a new job.

"Successful organizations have learned that high performance and sustainable results require attention to the relationships among employee, organization, customer and community,” said David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA, head of APA's Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program, according to MarketWatch.

In total, 21 percent of working Americans or more than one in five said they do not feel valued by their employers.

Factors such as non-monetary rewards, fewer opportunities for involvement in decision making, and fewer chances to use flexible work arrangements were cited as possible reasons for the lack of worker productivity.
