The family of the turnpike worker killed on the job last week has set up a fund to provide for his children's education, the man's wife tells WNWO News.

State Highway Patrol says 53-year-old Forest John Fletcher of Perrysburg was killed after a tractor-trailer veered into a work zone on the Ohio Turnpike near Fremont. Two other highway workers and the truck driver were seriously injured.

In an e-mail, Amy Fletcher, who says friends called her husband John or Fletch, expressed her gratitude to the hundreds of people who came to pay their respects at Saturday's funeral.

"The Turnpike and State Highway Patrol provided a beautiful tribute with the escort of patrol cars and many yellow work trucks, just like the one that has been in our driveway for so many, many years; it was very touching," Amy Fletcher wrote. "Our two older children were given a basket containing a white dove to release after the service concluded. It was very beautiful, and moving.

"This has been an extremely difficult time for us, but let's take a moment to look around. See the faces of the other men and women who put their lives on the line every day when they go to work," she continued. "I will take over John's daily prayer for your safe return to your families when your shift is over. And please remember, no matter how your day is going, no matter what pressures life is throwing at you...take the time to hug each other, say I love you, and know that at any moment, this COULD BE your last few minutes together."

Donations to the John Fletcher Children's Education Fund can be made at any Key Bank location, she wrote.
