TOLEDO -- Hundreds of people, including two well-known political figures, turned out for the chance to oppose the proposed closure of a Toledo USPS facility on Thursday night. 

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell was among the almost 300 concerned citizens, many of them postal workers, at a public meeting put on by the independent government agency at the Stranahan Theater.

USPS officials organized the meeting in order to give the public a chance to weigh in on their plan to close the USPS processing facility on South St. Clair Street.

While many at the meeting were there over concerns about the 400 jobs that may result in the closure, others insist the decision would cause harm to local small businesses and restaurants as well.

This is one of the best facilities in the country. We have to argue our case with the Postal Service...it doesn't make sense to take away this service from our region and take 2 or 3 days to deliver mail to customers. It's a real inefficient decision," U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) said about the proposed closure.

In mid-December, the USPS agreed to a five month delay in shutting down over 250 mail processing centers nationwide and 3,700 local post offices that include five in Toledo until mid-May.
