BEDFORD, MICH. -- More than 400 families received free food in Bedford on Saturday. The giveaway was a collaboration between the Monroe County United Way, the Monroe County Opportunity Program and the Monroe-Lenawee AFL-CIO. Michael Smith of the United Way helped coordinate the event.

"They are so thankful the people that are coming through, they can't thank you enough and we're just trying to help people prepare for a long winter," Smith said.

Throughout the morning, families pulled into the parking lot at Bedford High School collecting boxes containing frozen meat, canned vegetables and rice.
