TOLEDO -- A late afternoon fire caused a significant amount of damage to an abandoned warehouse on Monday evening.

Smoke billowing from the structure could be seen for miles.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the blaze, at the abandoned "Best Heating and Cooling" building, on Detroit Avenue near Poinsetta Avenue around 5:30 p.m.

Firefighters did the best they could to fight the flames, but several safety issues prevented them from going inside the building.

Officials labeled the blaze “code red” meaning firefighters could not to enter the building.

Another safety concern for rescue crews included the live electrical polls/lines at the site.

Toledo Edison employees were called to the scene to keep everyone at a safe distance.

Environmental service professionals also responded to the scene, to assess any possibilities that chemicals may have been left from the heating and cooling business that once occupied the facility.

Traffic was re-routed around the area while crews battling the flames.

An arson investigator was called to scene to assist with determining the cause of the fire.
