Researchers believe the number of children who have an autism spectrum disorder is much higher than we think. That's according to a new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
The study was done in South Korea, on tens of thousands of school kids. It found that 1 in 38 kids across the country has some form of autism, that's more than 2.5%. The study also found that more girls had autism than previously thought.
The approach is new as researchers had previously only looked at children known to have autism or who were at high risk of developing it. In the U.S. about 1% of children are estimated to have autism.
It's important to note the study doesn't necessarily mean that suddenly more kids have autism. Rather, it just means they were never diagnosed with it.
